why switch off reverse engage start engine

blazer 99 4wd,on park,start w/o problem,when try engage  reverse I feel starter grinding.
switch off:engage reverse and starter begin to work.any help please!!!!

Wow that sounds like quite the issue. Never heard of that before. The two circuits (P-N safety and ingnition) are completely isolated. The logical step would be to split the plastic covers on the steering column and check the shifter lever and the back of the ignition.
