I have a slow coolant leak from a gasket. Should this be an easy fix or should I be worried about a big mess? Car is not worth much.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There is a leak from the gasket under the engine next to the oil drain plug.
Rectangular looking in shape. Looks like I could unscrew and replace the
gasket easily enough but I don't know what is behind it. The car is not worth
much but I don't want to take it from wasting fluid (about 1/2 gallon every
week) to not running at all. Any thoughts?

Photo? That sounds like an oil leak, not a coolant leak. Which is it?

Thanks for taking the time to try to help. It is coolant. I have been adding only clear water since problem arose. Trying to avoid waste/pollution. It drips when I add water between the two metal panels and comes out clear. It comes from the flat area past the hatchwork metal (where the oil drains from). Only does it when the car is cold. As it warms up, no leak until it cools down again. It was dark already when the photo was taken, I can try to take a better one tomorrow. Thanks!

Flat area being the very low left corner of the picture, below the black oily looking surface.
