I have an automatic. is it typical to drop 2 inches when you shift to drive?

yes,i belive it has something to do with the traction control

Agreed, either a traction control feature or an auto-levelling device related to traction/performance.
Yes, its typical to drop when going from N to D. I have been told its because of the way the syncro's have been designed in the Automatic transmissions of the Z3. The Automatics are designed to be used Manually or Auto (the reason for the A/M Button in the Automatics). Its kinda like the semi automatics in alot of respects. Again this is what I have been told. My Auto does it to.
