You are right the 2003's were downgraded in the us. They arel alpine with a smaller v8 and less horse power only 375 and they all came automatic. I have only worked with the European z8's and didn't know that. All the us 2003's are automatic. Thanks to Wikipedia for the info...

I am the original owner of a 2003 Z8. According a very knowledgeable source there was approx 139 Z8s brought in. simultaneously in that year a much larger number, perhaps 450, of the BMW Alpinas were sold in the USA. I know that this is true as I bought my car in Cleveland and there was an 03 Z8 sitting next to a 03 Alpina in the showroom as well. I chose not to buy the Alpina for several reasons. Members of the loose organization here in the states have modified there z8 by switching to Alpina wheels 20" vs the Z8 18" and several other suspension components. The Alpinas do have a different engine which was modified for Alpina (a 540 engine versus the M5 engine in the Z8. Different seats and steering wheels were also in the Alpina. So the RAREST BMW in the US is the 2003 Z8 it is my belief. Many more Alpinas where brought in. Robbie

All BMW Z8 were stickshifts and all Alpina Zz8 where automatics - that I know of. For specific numbers by color have a look at this accurate calculator - https://www.carsaddiction.com/en/colors/bmw/Z8
