Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 1998 VW Cabrio convertible manual 5-speed. It shifts smooth into all gears and reverse, but when I start going faster in reverse it makes a crumpling, soft grinding or crunching sound, but not loud or alot.  Is this a problem?  I didn't check the transmission fluid yet.  It has 98,000 miles, but looks new and the top works great and its loaded.

you may want to get a transmission fluid change...the thing about "let sleeping dogs lie"...but would be an opportunity to rid the grounds of any shreds of brass that are the ones makin' with the noise~

Thank you........Do you mean a transmission fluid flush? And are there any filters or other things that would help the fluid change?

at the very least there will be a magnetic plug...not sure on filtration of Manual Transmission fluid...could investigate...probably should get off my toucas and start actin' like a GURU and diggin' into the web and finding the answer here~...yes a manual transimission fluid change could not hurt...will check at a filter block...that way we won't have to drop the pan~
