2001 Volkswagen cabrio NOT STARTING!

Asked by Hunter Aug 12, 2024 at 04:52 PM about the 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio 2 Dr GLS Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 VW cabrio it had been sitting for a year or so without being
started. At first it cranked but would not start I found it wasnt getting spark
and a spark plug wire was broke. After changing the ignition coil plug wires
and position sensor I finally got spark. I also changed the fuel pump. I can
only get the car to fire if i spray into the intake but it dies immediately after. I
have not worked on VW to much so just seeing if there is anything simple im
missing. Before breaking the bank replacing parts that just might fix the
issue.  Thanks for any help.

If it fires on starting fluid then the spark is good but there is no fuel, check fuses, fuel pump relay, fuel pump wiring, or your new pump is garbage.

Gene” Thanks for your input. I forgot to mention that I am getting fuel to the fuel rail thinking maybe I need to clean the injectors. Doing a quick test later I seen that after a couple cranks to pull a plug to see if it’s wet from gas. If not maybe the relay but the fuel pump is turning on and sending gas to the fuel rail.

"beatupchevy" Thanks for that. I have been cleaning all ground and connections I have ran into.Is there a specific ground you are referring to?

You stated that the plugs were wet, if that is the case then the spark is weak or goes someplace it should not go. Recheck the ignition system, run a compression test both dry and wet.
