According to Edmunds the Base is a 4 speed manual...only the GL is a 5 speed manual .... I sure hope the seller was not telling you a whopper of a lie and it is "only" linkage...Best of luck salvatore
Actually, the 5-speed was only sold in Canada (for 1 or 2 years at that), all US models were 4-speed. There is a small issue that can prevent shifting into reverse and it isn't a huge problem. One of the bushings in the shift linkage sometimes comes out, and even if you replace it, it has a chance to fall out again. Most mechanics can do a more permanent fix for under $40, although this can tend to reduce shifting smoothness.
(And yes, that is a Fox Wagon in my picture, I have this same problem.)

I had the same problem with my 1988 Fox Wagon. What is now Sam Swope VW in southern IN has the capability of putting out an APB to all dealerships and warehouses in US and Canada. I believe, however, that I got the last shifter parts (there are 3 plastic parts and Tom Adkins can give you the part numbers -- even if they are obsolete -- as well as drawings/specs via fax or email attachment) in the U.S. or Canada early 2011 (one part in Garland, TX, one part in Orlando, FL and the third, I believe in CA). You might, however, with the spec and dimension info, be able to have a plastics house fabricate the parts for you. Bobbie
