99 Chevy lumina over heated now engine makes noise and dose not want to idle

if it overheated bad enough you may have blown a head gasket. should do a combustion leak test to see if there are combustion gasses in the radiator. kit is about 50 bucks at napa.

I would run a compression test. Is the check engine light on? What are the trouble codes?
