Cam Plug replacement & Thermostat

Just recieved a quote from a mechanic for $1,400. He said changing the
cam plug alone would cost $700 because he needs to remove the
camshaft cover to get to it. He said it's about a 6 hour job. He also saod my
engine is running too cool and we need to change the thermostat along
with the evap purge valve. My question is twofold: 1) is it so difficult to work
on golf engines that multiple other parts need to be removed to get to the
cam plug and thermostat? 2) Is this quote i recieved excessive?

Hey Portilloant. There is a fair amount of stuff that has to be removed. But the price and time does seem excessive to me. If you go to Youtube and type 2005 vw golf valve cover removal, you'll find a video of a guy doing a turbo. I would expect that to be harder than yours. I don't know about car running too cold. To me, if it warms up enough that the heater blows hot air into the car, then it's warm enough.
