my 96 5 speed jetta had a cranking noise on stepping on the clutch while on the freeway. I pulled over, shut the car off, started the car again and the cranking noise on stepping on the clutch went away. However their is a humming noise only when the car is moving. Shifting and clutch feel is perfect. What could be the problem?

Peculiar noises aren't unusual in a standard transmission but the way that that noise went away on a reboot suggests there's something to pay attention to in there. You need to bite the bullet a bit see a professional either at a VW dealership or a transmission specialist. At this point a look my even be free and if there is a problem, detecting it early could save you some money not too far down the line ... or ... it could let you know that today may be a good day to trade that puppy in! Good luck ...
