The third generation Jetta was offered from 1993 to early 1999; 1999 is the year that you have to be careful of. Some are Jetta Mklll, others are MklV. As for your front brakes, they are disc, not drum brakes.

Don't waste your time with used brake disks, new ones are reasonable and you avoid much trouble. Also, get a service manual like a Haynes or Chilton (Bentley manual would be best). Always good idea to have the technical data handy for any procedure.
