Does this have an interference engine?

I don't know of any diesels which are not.

Yes. It's an interrerence motor. Only the 8 valve motor isn't of the 4 cylenders that VDub makes. I have replaced timeing belts in the TDI's many times, its part of the job. Not to mention most other audi and VDub's.

A TDI is an 8v. The 1.8L 8v motors from 85-98 Golf/Jetta's are non-interference. 16v, diesels, VR6's, and the newer motors are all interference. It is much better to spend $300 on a timing belt job now then to spend $2500 when the belt breaks and you need a new head.
