Had the same problem with my Wifes 2.0. Remembered one Golden rule about VW's...Only run Bosch electrical componants. Anything in the ignition must be Bosch as they have internal resistors in each componant, Cheaper aftermarket parts don't. Never seen a good platinum plug yet and I have a plug tester for checking aircraft plugs and have seen them all fail starting at 3,500 rpm. Run the standard Bosch. Also did you flush the fuel line before installing the new fuel filter to get all the junk out of the line? (get a sample when you do this in a clean glass mason jar, close it up and let it sit for 24 hours and check for sediment, water and phase separation) And lastly don't run Ethanol. None of my 8 vehicles can run that junk. Hope this helps. Good Luck

When this is happening ,is the check engine lamp on and flashing? If it's flashing it's an indication of a serious problem, such as a misfire which is what this sounds like,a quick test for the secondary ignition system(coil pack, plugs and wires)is to get a spray bottle with water and soak down the wires and coil pack, if the wires are weak and have carbon tracked to ground the water will accelerate this process. It's very common to have one wire start arcing out at the coil pack, when this happens you replace the coil pack and wires ,and pull out and inspect the spark plugs for excessive wear. When I replace these items I will use some silicone dielectric grease on the ends of the wires ,both at the coil and the plugs, besides insuring a good connection ,it also lubes the boots making installation easier. You will need a scan tool that is capable of clearing the codes and resetting the throttle housing,P0300,301,302,303,304 are all misfire codes!good luck with it,I will answer what I can for you.

"Busch only" is a common misconception with VW's. In '96 VW started using NGK plugs. Both my wife's 2000 2.0 Jetta and my 2001 1.8L Turbo Passat had VW/NGK branded plugs when I went to replace them. Talk to a VW dealership parts counter guy he'll tell you the same.
