When I start my 2001 Volkswagen jetta it runs rough and the check engine comes on but it only seems to be when it is raining or damp outside and only for a few minutes then it runs fine. What could it

That car has a distributor. If moisture collects inside the cap it prevents proper contacts between rotor and contacts. Buy a new cap, it has a seal, and the seal alone can not be replaced. Meantime, you can try a VERY THIN film of WD-40 inside the cap. There might even be some product that helps this, although I don't know what. Maybe I will invent it and get rich.

a good answer, Mr. Nut as the distributor was always the culprit when an engine got wet- in the past- but I would encourage our client to get the car to a mechanic for a service and look-over- the moisture might be a coincidence, and a check engine light is something to have checked- I wonder when this old VW last had a service?

I need to pay better attention, I didn't read the question fully, about the CEL. Good call and thanks jam for pointing it out
