2002 jetta with malfunction indicator light on, What is wrong?

IT CAN BE A SENSOR ,,,TRY DISCONECTING THE BATTERY AND SEE IF IT RESETS,,, IF NOT YOU MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE IN AND CHECK THE BATTERY IF ITS GOOD OR NOT BECAUSE IF THE BATTERY IS NOT GIVING ENOUGH CURRENT SOMETIME THAT TRIGGERS THAT INDICATOR LIGHT

Go to advance or autozone and they will check it for free. This is the same as a check engine light.Get the code and repost it here.

If you disconnect the battery it will clear the system and you can't read the codes. And if you have anti theft on it the car it may not restart due to disconnecting the battery.

I agree ,,,,and look for a electric mechanic shop that will give you a free diagnostic check for free and give you an estimate for free,,,there are a lot here in phoenix that do that,,,that will help,..trust me... I have found a lot of shops that help for free

I took the car to Advanced Auto. The diagnostic code is P0015 -Exhaust camshaft position timing over retarded. I have no idea what that means! And I guess reading it reset the codes, because the warning light went off and stayed off for the ride home. It is very cold right now, I am in an area that is 10 degrees and lower. Could the extreme cold be causing a problem that will go away when it warms up a bit? Your help is appreciated!

P0115 is for a engine coolant temperature sensor. It may be due to the cold. Take it to a garage and have them check the strength of the antifreeze. If it ok replace the sensor. ECT sensor.

I'm confused. The P0015 is Exhaust camshaft ... But you are suggesting it is P0115 for Engine Coolant Temp Sensor? Are they related? I drove the car this morning and the light has not come back on. Can I wait to see if it comes on again? Or do I need to get the car checked out? The outside temps are at -4 degrees - can it just be the cold making something stick?

You are correct. I thought it was p0115 and it is p0015. My mistake. Yes if the light comes back on replace the exhaust camshaft sensor.
