your not providing enough info but my 99 jetta that has 144k miles the lower control arm bushing went bad and the car was making clunking noise (sounding like a loose bowling ball in frnt) only when going over rough road also when parking the veh either going in reverse or forward it felt like the suspension was loose

Yea, you need to supply some more information here as it could be any number of issues.

an '02 Jetta is getting old enough that just about anything rubber in the suspension is due for a change. This would include the lower control arm bushings, the stabilizer bar bushings, and the strut mount/bearings. Next would be the rear axle bushings. Once you get all these changed, handling will be like new or better (depending on choice of parts).

not nessessaraly, i have an 01 and everything is fine.. get the front axles checked out, Mk4's are known for front suspension probs like that...does it make a noise all the time or only when you turn in a certian direction?
