cylinder 3 misfire

Asked by NickG Nov 14, 2011 at 04:59 PM about the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta GL Wagon FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So for the past few months, when it rains, the next day when we start our 2004 jetta the check engine light first flashes, then is solid after a few minutes.  The car rattles and runs really hard.  Have brought it to several garages, they say it is coming up as a cylinder 3 misfire, after investigating, they both have found no spark from the ecm and changed the ecm.  Two days later, same thing happening, brought it in again, changed out the ecm to old one, changed wires to ecm, etc.  4 days later, same thing happening.  Anyone have any ideas?

I would check for voltage bleeding through ground on coil driver #3. Check where harness is run and make sure the body is completely grounded. Add an extra ground to body of computer. Add an extra ground to valve cover and make sure its grounded. Water and electricity doesn't mix so isolate coil driver #3. Whatever positive charge is bleeding off when wet is around coil driver circuit #3. Its like electrolysis. It will find the shortest path to ground
