Help! 2005 Jetta Won’t Shift or Move After Stopping at Stop Sign

Asked by Jesse Winkle Dec 06, 2024 at 08:23 PM about the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey everyone, I’m really hoping someone out there
can help me figure this out because I’m at my wit’s
end. Here’s the situation:

I was driving my 2005 VW Jetta (6-speed
automatic) and came to a stop at a stop sign. I
went to go, and first gear was fine, shifted into
second gear, and then suddenly—it stopped. No
movement, no shifting, nothing. It just wouldn’t go
anymore.

What I’ve Done So Far:

    1.    Replaced Every Fuse: Except for three 10A
fuses, but I’ve swapped all the others to rule them
out.

    2.    Filled Transmission Fluid: Topped it all the
way up, so fluid levels are not an issue.

    3.    Checked the Shifter Cable: Included a video
below to show this is fine and functioning as it
should.

What’s Happening Now:

    •    When I start the car, all the gear indicator
lights (P, R, N, D, S) flash on the cluster.

    •    When I shift, the cluster initially shows the
correct gear, but after a few seconds, it switches to
second gear and begins flashing.

    •    The car won’t move or shift into any gear—
reverse, drive, nothing.

Extra Info:

    •    This came completely out of nowhere. My
transmission has never shown any signs of failing
before—no slipping, grinding, or hesitation. It’s just
like the car decided to quit on me out of the blue.

also in the first few seconds of starting it shows I’m
in second gear for a sec(the gear that the car went
into be for it stoped working) and then all the gears
on the cluster start flashing
