The key is research. You need to know what a reasonable price is for the car's given condition. You need to expect certain things to be present depending on environment. A car in Chicago is more likely to rust than a car in Orlando. You need to know what types of things go wrong with that year make and model so you can ask if they have had that trouble or had it fixed. That can affect both the overall price you pay as well as whether or not you even want to buy that particular car. If you don't think you have the ability to get the correct condition of the car bring someone with you or take it to a mechanic. They will be able to help you with problems with the car that will lower the price. If they say "don't buy it" then don't. Don't get attached to that car. They made others. Find a car not a problem. Finally, you can always ask them to come down on the price. It may not be unreasonably priced you may just want to pay less for it for budget reasons. Tell them that.
