Replacing CV Boots

Asked by mprimo Dec 27, 2010 at 06:57 PM about the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5L

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Beetle, diesel. One of my outer CV boots has a small tear. I figured I
should probably replace both (just turned 50,000 miles). My question is should I
replace inner and outer? Where can I get the best price on the boots? VW wanted
$312 to replace the one outer. Thanks, Mike

it's usually best to replace both inner and outer cv boots at the same time. it'll keep you from having to remove the axle again in a short period to replace the one you didn't do in the first place. also, i've found it's usually cheaper and a hell of a lot easier to just buy cv half shafts. they come with new cv's (inner and outer), new axle, new boots (inner and outer), plus new hardware already put together. it beats having to press off cv joints, install boots (good luck with the clamps! unless you use hose clamps that don't work right), and press the joints back on!. half shafts for those beetles usually run around $70-$80 per side.
