i don't have an owners manual handy and i am in desperate need for more oil but i
don't know what type to get...i know synthetic but i was told the range is
between 5w-50 and 10w-50 according to auto zone but i don't quite fully trust
them. are there any experts that can lend me a hand?

check your dipstick, oil cap, or sticker under the hood. those sometimes tell you what you need. 5w-50 and 10w-50 seem wrong to me but im not experienced with vw so dont take my word for it

Crap I should know this, but I can't remember. Give your local VW dealership's service department a ring, and ask. That way you don't have to wait around for an answer.

For that year I would suggest 5w 30 or 5w 40. (40 will be harder to find). older engines work better with a slightly thicker oil (only very slightly)
