1.8 99 VW Passat Wagon..

Asked by BrysonsMommy12 Mar 29, 2016 at 11:00 PM about the 1999 Volkswagen Passat 4 Dr GLS 1.8T Turbo Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving to work on the highway last Friday
morning and was going up a hill when I noticed my
car was starting to slow down. And I don't have
cruise control so my foot was on the gas. So I
pulled over, put my hazard lights on and put the car
in park. The car was still running then I tried to put
it in drive again, well it made this sound kinda like i
lost compression and so I turned the car off after
putting it back in park. Then I tried to start it and
everything but my timing belt would turnover. I
then looked at the timing belt and it was in there
just not tight. I dont know if I vent any valves or
what. Can someone please tell me if I me see my
car up? Really don't have the money being a single
parent and the only parent working right now..

You may have lost tension on the belt we had ajetta that had a broken timing belt tensioner. We dodged a bullet and did no damage to the car.

Really? Okay well I hope that's what it is. I mean i only paid $1000 for the car because that's all i had and I had to get to work somehow and Taj my son to daycare. The car has 204k on it. How much do you think it would be if that's what's wrong with it?

U probably lost tension on your accessory belt, which is for alternator, power steering, etc. This is not timing belt. It will not ruin engine but you can't run car. Simple fix. Timing belt on your car you probably can't see and if it goes out it more than likely will ruin your engine because you have an interference engine which simply means 'break a belt, blow the engine'. Check your timing belt asap so it doesn't happen
