Temp gauge shows van overheating

Asked by Lizzie1959 Jun 05, 2014 at 12:48 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet Astro Extended RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have 98 Astro Van, recently changed water pump for 4th time in as many years, for
last mth everytime first start van, within 10 mins the temp gauge shows overheating and
will stay on 30 seconds or so then go off and temp gauge drops to 210 or below.  Van
does not indicate overheating but gauge still showing overheating everytime start van,
which is 2 to 3 times a day.  Is this an issue with computer or thermostat sticking, I'm
no mechanic but cannot figure out whats going on

Halo, check if theres not any air in your water system to check it,remove radiator cap or water bottle, start engine and let idle, put the waterhose in the radiator while water is running, press radiator hose for air to excape and the water will fill the airholes,a mulfunctioning thermostat or a faulty temp.sender unit can cause it aswell.

Take an old radiator cap and remove the smaller rubber gasket. This will coolant to flow both way without allowing presume to build, but it will allow all air to exit fom engine. You can run around the block once - if it's a short block, but don't drive any distance with this modified cap on. That will tell you what's going on.,
