Possibly the synchronizers are worn out. Pull the shifter out and look down in there and see if anything is binding. If you can't see anything take it to Aamco they can pull it out and tear it down and find the problem if it's a vehicle you want to keep.
I would find a local family owned mechanic that does transmissions too and ask them to check it out and quote you the repair. I find AAMCO to be extremely overpriced they are a franchise. I was not happy with three experiences I had with AAMCO and ended up finding a local family owned transmission shop and they bent over backwards to take care of my car and and to this day he services my car and many of my friends who now go to them. Good luck. Ps I have a friend who has purchased used/rebuilt tranis from advertised salvage yards which also gave a decent warranty and had them installed by their mechanics saving lots of money.
