thats normal for that car had one 1996 for 5 years if you have anymore question just post it

i have a 98' cavalier 4dr with a 2.2, 4cyl. First of all, when i got my car there was very slow acceleration, and you usually had to give it gas to start the engine. eventually, i learned to listen for that telltale tic-toc after turning my key to acc before staring the car, because i had to mash the gas less often and my mileage sucked anyway due to the problems in the car. after running it for about a year and a half, it stopped going over 20mph. my mechanic checked it out for me and we ended up replacing the coil packs. my car ran great, better than it ever had, for about two weeks, and then, suddenly, while driving on the road, she stopped accelerating altogether. called my mechanic in again, and he told me i needed a new fuel system. we replaced the injectors and the fuel rail, and now we're just looking for a fuel pump. not something often carried used, i presume.
