My Mazda Miata 1996 needs new engine

My Mazda Miata 1996 after years of running great with no surprises suddenly
died on me.  My mechanic says the engine which has approximately 154000
miles on it needs to be replaced.  He says it will cost me over $4000 to replace
the engine.  Do I need to find a new mechanic or is this the current cost of
engine replacement?

Cost is probably in the ball park. 154,000 is not many miles for a Miata. Makes me wonder what the service history is.
