Is the front spoiler lip necessary?

Question type: Car Customization

I'm trying to determine if the front spoiler is mechanically important to the car? In 11 years I have repaired it 3 times and am now considering replacing it?
Thanks for your advice!

Front lip spoilers really come into play if you're constantly racing. You can look at the front of your Miata and plainly see if it actually helps you or not. If you have not lowered your Miata, installed an after market coil-over kit, and put on a set 16 to 17" low profile wheels and tires, so as to really put it to good use.......that front lip spoiler is pointless. Here's another fact, if your car is at a factory hight measure the distance between where the CENTER of the lip spoiler is to the ground. If its more than 5", its there for style. The higher it is the more its for form than function. Do you have a pic of it all? Attached you'll find a pic that displays a functional front lip spoiler. Now I don't know what your car looks like, but if it DOES look like this, FIX IT. If not leave it off. It's not gonna hurt anything. good luck and I hope I helped out your situation.

Thanks, Lawrence. You were really helpful! The spoiler is about 6 1/2" from the ground. I have always thought that it was purely cosmetic but someone once told me that it was to help cool the front disc brakes. (That didn't make sense to me.) We bought the car new with the LS trim package and have not modified any of it as yet. Thanks again!

The factory lip has brake ducts in it, but unless you put some piping between the ducts and the disk, they won't really do anything. Also, unless you are track-driving your car, the downforce makes no difference at all.

Then it is OFF of there! In less than a week it has grazed curb tops....once parked at the dealer and then I just did it stopping at a convience store ...I mean it was grinding concrete....maybe I can sell it to someone that prefers stock quality over aftermarket. Other thing if not helping anything then simple extra weight makes it a no brain improvement to remove...whatever does not help hurts in that dept
