A lot of convertible's have safety latches to prevent the top from moving around or closing when they're supposed to be open, look closely at the side rails that support the top and see if there is a lever that locks, or a spring loaded pin, (depending on the year of the car) also check for alignment or damage, sometimes if it's not just right the tops can be difficult to open or close.
