Engine wont crank

One day i went to start my 2006 audi a6 quattro 3.2
and everything seemed fine but it would not turn
over.   I can hear what sounds like the fuel pump
pulse 3 times whenever i push the starter button or
use the key in the ignition.  The battery is new and
has good voltage.  The steering isn't locked and i
can select through the gears.

check all of the relays and fuses, if you don't find any problems with those... read the forums.
