Yes, Volvos are great cars that seem to run forever (I had a 2006 Volvo S40 2.4i that is still running great..so I know they are great cars). Why are you buying one with such high mileage though?? They are still European cars that can be more costly to make major repairs to compared to Japanese or American cars. My advice would be to go with a newer Volvo with less miles!

Just the usual stuff (oil, filters, etc.). You should also get the timing belt and water pump done. I would not be too concerned about the mileage. If the car has been properly maintained over the years, it has a lot of life left in it.
The only 2 things that really irked me about my old Volvo S40 2.4i (2.4 Liter 4 Cylinder Engine) were the fog light (Volvo and apparently Sweden's idea of a fog light is having ONE rear bulb illuminate brighter when the fog light button is pressed), I prefer having standard fog lights in the FRONT of the car, so I can see and BE seen! The other thing (and this is a doozy!)....The cabin air filter is in the engine compartment and this required removal of the accelerator and brake pedals by the mechanic to get at it and replace it. Costs around $80-$85 at a non-Volvo repair shop (God only knows what Volvo charges!). Aside from that, great car! I hope you're not paying more than $1100.00 for the S70, if you do get it...otherwise, pass on it! Kelly Blue Book shows that to be the value for one in Good Condition sold by a Private Party: http://www.kbb.com/volvo/s70/1999-volvo-s70/sedan-4d/?condition=good&vehicleid=6131&intent=trade-in-sell&mileage=200000&options=6438699|true&pricetype=private-party

About the cabin filter, that's nuts. My BMW has the housings in the engine bay, but they're easily accessible. I don't get the rear fog light concept, either.

Racer_x, the fog light you are referring to is a safety feature. It is to be used during bad weather instead of using your flashers so other drivers know where your left rear of the car is & can safely pass you. In Europe, that fog light is active in the right side since they drive on the other side of the road. Front fog lights are an available option.
