Looking at purchasing a 2000 Volvo S70 GLTSE with 171,000 miles for $2000 for our teen daughter. I am wondering if I should be scared of the high miles.

No need to be scared. However, good service records are a necessity. Make sure to find a good mechanic that specializes in Volvos just in case. Also make sure to get the timing belt replaced right off the bat if it hasn't been recently. S70's are certainly reliable, but not cheap when something does break. An Accord or Civic of the same vintage would likely be a better bet from a reliability standpoint. Of course, it's hard to find a mid-sized car of that era safer than an S70. I bought my 98 S70 T5 with 168,000, and it's been almost 8000 miles with only an oil change and some new tires to deal with.

Go to a certified mechanic - have them look it over on a lift and check everything! I wish I would have had done that...bought the same car as you are for $3500, and I have spent almost $5000 on it fixing it...and still has problems! Just had a radiator replacement done - $1K and now an oil leak has developed...enjoy the brand, hate that they are money pits! Ball joints wear quickly...looking at another $1K to fix that...

No need to worry as long as you do regular maintenance. I have a 2000 Convertible with 170000 miles and runs like a new one an looks great.
