My 1997 Chevy Blazer with the 4.3 won't start

Asked by Leecc1969 Apr 06, 2015 at 01:05 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I can add a little bit of gas to the throttle
body and it will start every time and will run
perfectly. Its just that without doing that it
will turn over but won't start. It has a new
fuel filter on it. Could it be that the fuel
regulator has gone bad or maybe the fuel
pump itself is weak? You can hear the fuel
pump run when you turn on the key, I have
even tried to prime using the ignition but to
no avail. It seems to have lost its
prime.....any advice you could give is
definitely appreciated.

Good guess on what it could be, you need to check the fuel pressure with the key on engine not running, to see if it's within spec, if it isn't than the fuel pump is probably on it's way out.

97 model was known for bad ignition switches. However I go suggest checking the fuel pressure and leak down like stated

fuel pressure to start this truck has to be 56 psi or better and should build quickly a healthy pump will build 63 psi in less then 2 seconds also after the two second prime the pressure should hold if it doesnt check for leaking regulator or injector and if it drops off immediately then the check ball in the fuel pump is defective, if the pump is bad do your self a favor and buy a good brand name pump like ac delco delfi or bosch a little more pricey but will last a hell of alot longer
