Gas and temp gauge needle spun all the way around and doesnt work

Asked by Bambi Apr 14, 2020 at 07:39 AM about the 2000 Buick Park Avenue Ultra FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Why or how could the needles on dashboard go completely
beyond the informational digits and readings? They are
forced by the little tab that stops it.is this an electrical
issue?

do they do this on start up then come back or stay there . does it happen with key on, engine off. very likely a voltage problem. have you checked battery and charging voltage and engine ground.(s)

To reset the needles back to the tab on the left you could buy a super magnet, aka neodymium magnet. A half inch cubed is good enough, place a Kleenex on the plastic screen to keep you from scratching the plastic. Figure out which orientation of the magnet moves the needle the slowly rotate the magnet counterclockwise till the needle swings back onto the tab. You may have to do this a few times to get the magnetic field to hold and move the needle.
