The battery in the key entry remote is thr original.  Does it need to be replaced by a Buick
technician or can it be done by me?

You can do it. It will unsnap and just make sure you put the same replacement battery in, and before you take the old one out look for polarity, which side ,+ or − is facing up. http://www.ehow.com/how_6939564_replace-entry-remote-battery-buick.html
