Have your computer scanned for the faulty code. That is the only way you could possibly know what is wrong.
Did you check for a fuel leak? Did you hit anything on the road? is this a new issue? Did you have codes read?
Check catalytic converter
First things first for the I6 engine, check the CEL code. For the gas smell, check your fuel regulator located on drivers side, just under the plastic resonator box. Common place to leak, you'll even smell it while driving.
Thank you for the feedback. I got a diagnosis. PO128 coolant thermostat and COO40 right tire speed censor. Anyone with these issues? Is it costly? Is it something I have to do now or can it wait?

What is the year, make, model, engine size, 4dr, suv, 4wd? You need to be specific before anyone really can give you additional feedback.
Yes I have a 2004 Buick Rainier , 6 engine, 4door,4wd,SUV. Thx
Marisol, your CEL's have nothing to do with the gas smell. Check your regulator first, then your gas filler neck. There was a recall years ago for the filler neck on our platform. The speed sensor is probably a hub starting to go bad, may or may not need to be done soon. The thermostat, I'd do sooner than later, it's fairly easy job despite what others say. I remove the alternator, battery, and battery base for easy access. Being you have the 04' version, your temperature sensor is right above the thermostat, replace that too. 06 and newer are on the other side of the engine, very difficult to get to.
Thank you so much for your advice. Will deff take it and run with it!!
Is there a video out there on how to change the thermostat. Maybe the tire sensor.
Unless you have a tire machine, good luck with that sensor.
Marisol, it's pretty straight forward doing it the way I described. Remove the serpentine belt, remove the alternator bracket on the front. Remove the battery completely and the battery base/horn completely. Remove the alternator, use a ratcheting box end wrench for the bottom bolts. After these are removed, the thermostat and temp sensor are right there and easy to get to. You may see a video of going through the wheel well. If you have tiny hands and arms, this is the fastest way, but very difficult for me to do it that way.
