The shift interlock is not releasing. On some cars, you have to push fairly hard on the brake pedal to release it. Some cars work off the brakelights. If, for what ever reason, your brakelights are not working, the interlock will not release.
10 four on that answer, an overide proceedure is usally in operators manual for dead batterie un lock
There's a button under a little cover on the side of the shift lever to over ride the lock, pop off the cover and stick your finger in there, push. That should do it, but for a permanent fix paste: www.caliberforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17838

My wife put our car in park, but it still says Nutrol on the digital by the speed on the front panel. I tried to push the brake as hard as I could, It did not move the shifter out of park posision. I checked the brake lights. They are working. I don't see a cover to take off to reset the shifter. It is a 2009 Dodge Caliber. Thank you guys for the great info. Is there any were else to check before I have it toed to a shop?

I had the same problem they changed a switch I think it was a brake switch it was a one time part I guess if you remove it you need to get another one well tht didn't solve the problem I was told it could be the body control module is that true and what does that part do can I keep driving my car by using that release button on the side of the shifter?
So whats the fix? Brake light switch?
