I would suggest you check one of two things, the thermostat is old and stuck. If the thermostat doesn't open when it should, your engine will continue to get warmer, then hot. That's the cheap fix. Equally as possible is that you have a blown gasket, could be head gasket. If the head gasket blows, the engine coolant leaks into the oil channels and the engine gets hot and overheats. Do you smell a sweet smell when your car gets hot? Check the oil levels, is the oil level higher than it should be and does the oil have the color and resemblance of chocolate milk? An engine overheating is a serious symptom and should be checked by a mechanic or someone qualified. If you ignore it, you will ruin your engine. Best of luck
Could it be the radiator
There are 2 thermostats in the thermostat housing , it could be one or both bad. If you are leaking fluid most likely the PLASTIC housing is cracked and you could also have a bad thermostat.
my 2009 is doing the same thing. I live in So Cal, and my calibre hates it when the temp gets over 80. Anytime with 45" over driving and the tranny starts making "whirring/squeeing sound), and if it's over 100...forget about a non-stop ride, I have to pull over after about 1 hr because she overheats. I have read other websites and apparently the tranny is awful (wish I knew before I bought). Now im stuck with a very finicky engine. I am thinking of putting in a off market cooler for the engine.

Best Answer The thermostat was my issue. Had it replaced yesterday at Velasquez Mufflers in Joliet, IL and they did an awesome job. Didn’t take long and wasn’t too expensive $120! Will be taking my car there for all maintenance going forward! I was about to replace the radiator $270, but God! The check engine light came on and threw a code that indicated the thermostat wasn’t functioning! Hit the nail right on the head!
How much do it cost to replace a blown head gasket 2007 Dodge Caliber
I have a 2008 Dodge Caliber and the engine overheated light comes on when I'm going down the freeway and it's warm outside if I have to drive more than like 30 minutes. The transmission starts to make this whining sound and it feels as if it doesn't want to accelerate or it's having problems shifting into gears I was told that this car has a special Transmission in it that doesn't have gears so I'm not sure what it's supposed to feel like. I don't know what's going on but my check engine light is not on so I can't have it check for codes. I really need help on this issue I know nothing about cars and can't afford another one
its says there are 2 thermostats...are they both the same? or are there different ones? I need to replace my water pump and water outlet. It says Thermostats on the parts list and am not sure if both are the same or different. Thanks.
caliber 1.8 2008! does anyone know in what temperature the thermostat should react? I am living in a warm country (Greece) it's summer and always have an issue with the engine colling system!!! thanks

I understand mostly what everyone is saying, but my car RPM gauge goes up over 200 when I'm driving up hill and my car gets hot and the engine transmission light comes on. That's not the same as the hot and cold light. Does anyone know what makes my 2010 dodge caliber overheat driving uphill and lose power at the same time?
