Check engine light and vsc lights on

I had the same problem with my 2007 Avalon xls. I took it to AutoZone and they tested it and said it was because my gas cap was'nt tightened tight enough, so i tightened it till it clicked, then disconnected the battery connections for 30 seconds to reset the check engine and VSC light and i have'nt had a problem since!
I followed farmboy directions, worked perfect. Thanks brother!!

Thank you, farmboy! My husband didn't believe it would work when I told him. But 2 minutes later, success!! Although my husband said to note that the check lights will go off after a time of the error not happening. Whatever, this gave me peace of mind much sooner!

I followed Farmboy93 advice on the gas cap. I tightened the gas cap and unhooked the battery then hooked it back up and the VSC & check engine lights went off. However they came back on. So i bought a new gas cap repeated the process and the lights went off again. So this morning they're bacl on. Has anybody had an actual problem that cause those lights to come on that had to be fixed other the it being a issue with the gas cap? Any suggestions?

2005 Avalon both Check Engine and VSC lights on. 3 months ago, gas cap tightening to click fixed it. This time issue was misfiring cylinder with bad ignition coil. Needed periodic maintenance of changing spark plugs too. Service guys explained that the system tries to protect itself when it gets this type of error, so it actually could have shut down the engine. I noticed a brief shutdown twice during acceleration. it also turned off the cruise control. There is another pesky player possibly tripping these lights: the various oxygen sensors in the exhaust stream. Again, system protection may shut down engine to prevent too much unburned gas going out to the catalytic converter, which would get very hot processing it. Sensor can be expensive to replace.
2006 Avalon Limited with check engine and VSC lights on. Lazor Cruise Control would not stay engaged. Bought new Totota replacement gas cap from dealer and disconnected/reconnected battery. Lights went off and Labor Cruise Control working for 3 weeks now! My Lord Jesus led me to this site; Praise Him! Additional thanks to farmboy!
Thank You Farmboy93. Per your instructions I tightened the gas cap, unhooked the battery for about 60 seconds, then hooked it back up, and the VSC & check engine lights went off. It has been a week and the two lights have not come back, but I did notice that my gas cap plastic threads are barely engaging with the gas tank outlet, and a very slight push, pushes the gas cap out. After 175,000 miles maybe time to change the gas cap!

Disconnect battery -ve terminal for 60 seconds and reconnect the battery. The check engine light n VSC light no longer on the gage cluster and restore the cruise control on my 2015 Toyota Avalon. Thanks Farmboy93.
You can also reset the light by depressing the odometer reset button while turning the ignition to on, NOT START & holding it for a few seconds until the dashes all disappear then release the reset button. This works if you fix the problem or the oil change reminder light is on. Easier than disconnecting the battery.
2006 Avalon xls: Scan DTC(Diagnostic Trouble Codes) is P0456. Found gas cap not tightened, re-apply it till 3 clicked. I did NOT use OBD scanner to erase the code, and I did NOT disconnect the battery. The light of "Engine Check", VSC were still on. And then drive the car couple trips. Then, both went off at next start.
Update on my prior answer. After re-apply the gas cap, the lights off for a while and then came on again (still code P0456). Replace with a NEW gas cap (cost $8.5). So far so good. (2 weeks later).
2006 Avalon. Same lights stay on. Additional twist - the engine temp gauge climbs to the overheat stage. Not sure if it is the engine actually overheating, or if the gauge is trying to appear in distress to get me to address the gas cap?
My mother-in-law take the Avalon 2000 to Midas and they take her money [$1000] for something she don't need i change the gas cap and problem solved
REPS & Thank You. Checked the manual first, it said Take To Your Toyota Dealer. Apparently they have mechanics specially trained to tighten the gas cap.
I checked my car at auto parts, auto zone, and O'really they told me you Check engine and VSW from Oxygen sensor I bought them 360$ and I replaced them but the check engine and VSC light are still on. PLEASE HELP !!!!!!! what should I do????
After reading all the posts, I bought a factory gas cap for $36, and it didn't help. Got a scan (it's a 5 minute job), and needed a cam sensor.
Don’t you love CarGurus and thank you Farmboy. Was so excited that this worked, My engine and VSC light where on. Had boyfriend unhook battery cable..but I figured it out ( senior lady) Thanks to all

I’m having the same issues.. VSC light traction light and check engine light, having small power issues now too. I got a new gas cap, didn’t fix issue. Any ideas?
2003 Avalon XLS had VSC Engine Check and Trac Off lights on every once in awhile, Removed gas cap, lubricated O-ring with WD-40, cleaned and lubed filler tube seat with WD-40. Problem solved with no battery cable disconnect.

The World needs more people like you! 2006 Avalon Limited is purrrring like a kitten again. I did have to disconnect the battery for a couple minutes on my model Toyota. All the best!
I reset mine 3 times and finally took it to a repair shop. The vehicle misfired a couple of times on my last road trip - 165000 miles never been tuned up. Coil pack needs replaced on back side - I am going to replace them all as it is cheaper to buy a six pack rather than just the 3 for the back. Also going to replace plugs and wires at the same time - I need to get 40k more miles before I buy a new car hopefully this does the trick. I will post back if it does not ... maintenance work scheduled in 3 days.
I had same problem. I cleaned the filler pipe top and the gas cap compression ring, squirted some WD40 on the compression ring and have had no more indicator light problems.
Your site and readers saved me a lot of hassle and expense a couple of days ago. Both lights came on suddenly while I was on highway near sunset. I got off an exit safely. Read the various accounts of readers. Retightened the gas cap, disconnected the battery and reconnected after a minute. Both lights went away and I could drive the remaining 270 miles without any issues. Thanks.
some good reading here , my 2000 avalon came up with code po3o4 misfire on cylinder 4, also code p1357 . pulled the engine cover unplugged 4 and went to start and no go, plugged 4 back in started but still rough idle. so un unplug 2.4 and 6 engine near stalls .. clear codes for another read codes reread for all 3 cylinders 2,4,6 but is idling smooth again and now vsc off and vsc lights are on no check engine light on . any thoughts on this cheers Don
My check engine and vsc lights are on in my 2005 Toyota Avalon LT. I just tightened the gas cap, and when I get home, I'll unhook the battery. Crossing fingers that's all that's wrong. Times like this, I really miss my late husband.
My Avalon check engine light, vsc light and vsc off light came on following me driving through about 4 inches of water on the road. I discovered this after I had finished a visit and was headed home. The lights stayed on the entire fifty mile trip home. The next morning I disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes, then hooked it back up. Problem solved. I'm sure something, a sensor got wet and after drying out over night a simple reset ended the problem.
Last Friday, the VSC, VSC OFF and CHECK ENGINE lights all came in at once in my 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS. It was idling a little funny but I was able to get it to my job. I moved it Sunday for a mechanic friend to come tow it and it was idling fine. I wasn't about to take a chance and try and drive it, possibly doing more damage. He replaced the variable valve timing solenoid and said having it towed was the right decision. It's good to have friends you can trust.
Farmboy , your the best! Tightened cap and disconnected battery in my 2006 Avalon - Problem solved. Burlington Butch
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!! I tightened my gas cap and disconnected the batteryfor 30 sec. Wow! the lights are gone off...
Hi Farmboy93! Now I know why I like farmboys so much. I had the same problem with my 2007 Toyota Avalon 6-cylinder (the "check engine" light and VSC light with the scary out-of-control vehicle icon, you know, the one with the squiggly skid marks behind the car, came on). The owner's manual was naturally of no assistance. So, I tightened my gas cap until it clicked, and I used a pair of vice grips to gently remove the "+" battery terminal connector from the battery terminal, counted a nice, slow 30 seconds, then firmly reattached the connector, replaced the terminal cover, and closed the car's hood. I started my car, and the warning lights were refreshingly absent from my dashboard. Thanks again for saving me time, money & worry. I wish you a long, prosperous and happy life. -Andrew from North Carolina
