Wondering should I buy one with 172,000 miles and how
much into replace timing

I think the 4 cylinder has a chain but the V6 may have a chain or a belt depending on the exact model of engine. If a car has never had the belt replaced at 172k then it is WAY overdue. Ask to see the maintenance records.
