whats making the grinding noise??

My front brakes were replace 18 months ago along with my rotors.
Recently while braking there is a hard grinding sound. Some days reeeally
bad, some days barely. I have taken to mechanic twice. He first changed
brake pads in rear. This time he says he can not find anything wrong with
front or back brakes. Of course today it is not making the god awful noise.
COuld there be something wrong with the rear drums that isn't visible?

Maybe the drum brakes need adjustment. Where is the noise coming from?
I think its coming from the back. I would hope that the mechanic would have already adjusted the drum and if not I guess I need to find a new mechanic
When it grinds really bad you can feel the vibration in the floor
I had this happen to me on my 93 Caddy. They sounded awful but when I had them inspected I was told numerous times that nothing was wrong. Drum brakes can be adjusted but I think your problem is that they grind from rust and dirt buildup that gets caught in between the shoe and the drum. I found that if I put light pressure on the brakes for the first 500 yards or so and got them warm, it disappeared. Also, it eventually went away. This indicates to me that it may have been the brake shoe material used and I have now worn through that layer on the shoes.
Did they turn the drums or only install new brake shoes? If the shoes are contaminated or if the drum needs turning it could explain the problem.
