1999 tacoma 3rd gear slips out

Asked by Michael Aug 30, 2020 at 01:41 PM about the 1999 Toyota Tacoma Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 tacoma, 45,000 miles,  has a problem in 3rd gear. When shifting from
2nd to third the transmission pops out of 3rd. If the shifter is held in third it will
only stay in gear as long as it is held. the other gears are ok. What are the
options to consider for repair?

Rebuild the transmission. Probably worn bearings and/or synchros.

Actually it turned out to be worn out bushings on the shifter. Had those replaced and the truck drove like new again. No internal transmission damage.
