My 1996 buick regal custom 3.8L temp gage is running almost hot. Help!

Asked by van863 Dec 23, 2015 at 10:42 AM about the 1996 Buick Regal Custom Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've replaced the radiator cooling fan, temp sensor and thermostat and still get temp gage reading of 75% toward hot.  While driving the temp gage will vary between 25% to 75% toward hot. The radiator fan still does not come on til I unplug the temp sensor. the temp gage also drops to zero with the unplug. Could the onboard computer be creating this problem? I hope not.

Did you purge the air out of the cooling system? If so, possibly needs the system flushed.

I did bleed out the air in the cooling system. I'll see what I can do to flush it. I ran the car about 4 miles down the road to Walmart for a few things. it ran 60% cool most of the way, but at the stop lights that stayed red for a while, it heated up to 95% then dropped when moving again making me think the electric radiator fan is still not coming on. I may see if there's more air to purge.
