Rear Axle Assembly 01 Jimmy 4x4

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Instead of rebuilding the rear differential, I am considering simply swapping out the entire rear axle. My question involves which axle assembly will fit. Specifically, does it matter if the assembly I get is 4x2 instead of 4x4 and does it matter if I get the ZR2 option 3.73 gear ratio or the 3.43 ratio on my truck now? If I do get a 4x2 axle, will I still be able to put the truck into 4x4?

I don't know about the other stuff but you have to have the same ratios in both axles to use four wheel drive.

Just made the mistake of using a 4x2 in a 4x4. Its a narrower rear end by about 4 inches. You need to keep the same ratio for 4x4.
