I found 1998, should be same for 4.3L engine http://www.diyforums.net/crankshaft-cam-sensor-for-98-chevy-blazer-4.3-v6-location-how-do-i-replace-...-841498.html
Same page show CAMshaft position sensor, which is part of distributor. None show specifically 1996, but I found 1995 is same as 1998 so your '96 will be too. As long as you have 4.3L

Hi guy's. I changed my Crank shaft positioning sensor..on my 2000 GMC Sonoma..4.3 vortex..such a easy Job.. one little bolt..and pulled Right out...my old one had 3 out of 4 holes on The side of the sensor filled up with gunk...my truck would go up to about three grand on the tack..then act like it's going up against a rev limiter..and back fire out the exhaust...changed just about everything i could think of...now with my new sensor in..the motor really settled down and The vibration is all gone...mine is located right under timing chain cover...easy fix... thanks for your time... yall have a wonderful holiday season..be safe and keep motoring..
