how good is the automatic 4wd

Very very good! I have it on my '01, and living in Michigan, I hardly ever lock the 4WD on during the winter. The fact that the native state of the drive train is FWD, also helps.
I have went up a fairly steep incline with mine pulling a fish house up a hill. I had it locked in 4wd and put it in low 1. The tranny is fine. The V6 engine is under powered. I made it up the hill with a run and steady gas. I wouldn't recommend moderate to sever snow depth. The opposite tires spin(more like a Jeep Quadratrack). I guess in short, the tranny holds up its end of the bargain, just underpowered engine wise.

Technically, it doesn't have 4 wheel drive; it has part time all wheel drive. 4 wheel drive vehicles have a transfer case with a choice of gear ranges; typically the low range is 1/3 or 1/4 of the normal speed, giving you the power to climb steep hills, the ability to go very slowly, and the control you need when negotiating obstacles.
