Ford escape transmission

I'm trying to find a used transmission for my 2007
3.0L 4x4 escape. What years have interchangable
trans for a 2007? I can get one from a 2002 for
really cheap but I think there must be some
difference maybe with electrical/wiring. Can it be
done? I have both vin numbers but not sure if
decoding the vin can tell me anything useful to
swap.  When I search for transmissions on car-
part.com it only matches 2007 and 2008 models
for a 2007 even though I believe all of the models
2001-2008 used the cd4e trans.

2005 was the first year of the console shifter, so 2005 to 2007 would be a direct fit. You can probably get an older one to work, but do some more research, the AWD was set up different in the 2001 to 2004 with a switch on the dash, 2005 to 2007 it was all computer controlled via the ABS sensors. So maybe it's only something to do with the transfer case? 2008 was the second Gen, so I am not sure on the backward compatibility on those.

The Haynes Service manual breaks down the removal by the years mentioned above. A junk yard or even O'Reilly's, which sells remans., might be able to tell you if they are compatible. You'll need part of the VIN to do so. Yes they are mostly CD4Es.
