High Quote for an Oil Leak

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I have a 95 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon. I recently had all of the seals
around the oil pan replaced in an attempt to stop leaks.  There is still a
med/small leak behind the distributor cap.  It's losing about a quart of oil
every 2-3 weeks depending on use. To get to the cap; a bunch of wiring,
the water pump, and most of the coolant system have to come out. I was
quoted $1200 for labor and parts to replace the distributor cap, the water
pump, and some old wiring and the seals. Does this seem like a fair price?
It's a 5.8 Litre V8 engine. I know those parts aren't expensive, but they told
me I was basically paying for a full day of labor. Thoughts?

Labor is expensive. Shop around if you don't like the price.

I had a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a lot of miles and it leaked oil like a sieve due to age and neglected oil changes. Seals naturally dry out and shrink with age so I put in a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and the leaks stopped after just a few hours of driving. No more mess on the garage floor for only $4 at WalMart or at your parts store. Try it and see. The engine runs better because it also gently dissolves sludge. You may also want to check the PCV valves because if they are gunked up, engine blow by will cause internal pressure that increases leakage. I hope this helps.

The water pumps are around $200 the distributor is about $300 (replace the complete unit not just cap and rotor) labor is high because it a pretty big job ( I know first hand have done many of these). I would still shop around and see if you can do a bit better. Good luck Dan
