The only way to know for sure is to get a quote from a mechanic.

to buy a rebuilt transmission at Auto Zone it is about $2k with tax ..... to hire a mechanic to r&r (I do not think this includes the torque converter replacement price) should be no more than 3k but shops prices vary (so yes you must call shops and ask them what the y charge to r&r and ask if they will allow you to find the transmission and have it delivered to their shop or ask them if they have someone they work with and what the costs may be.... ask about peripheral parts that pertain to the transmission and also google to ask if the car typically has the torque converter replaced at the same time.... some shops will not r&r a transmission without replacing the converter. There may be a core refund if the old transmission is returned to Autozone, or any place the new / rebuilt transmission is bought.... is anywhere from $500 to $1,500. estimated. You will have to know what questions to ask .... when you ask the mechanic. or they will usually not inform you. At least that is my experience. ... well, ... until i start talking and asking questions.
