Will a misfire on cyl 8 cause an engine not to run?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 96 chevy subrban 5.7l. Recently changed the entire ignition system, from
distributor to plugs including the ingition control module. Truck ran like a top. Then I
jumped time. Re timed motor and replaced the chain and gears. Im left with a misfire
on cyl. 8 only. compression tested at cranking, only in the low 70s, while other
cylinders on the same bank are reading 140's. Im thinking its a bent valve, but would
one cylinder keep the motor from running?

I knew I wasn't crazy. But thats the issue I'm having. Cranks no start. Cyl 8 misfire code. Low compression on only that cylinder. It's driving me nuts.

Will it start with a shot of starting fluid or put gas in throttle body?
ShipyardMech27 answered 9 years ago
After a few shots of starting fluid yes, more often than not. Then its just running rough, backfiring, normal symptoms of a misfire.

These dam computers. Don't make it easy. If was old motor you could unhook the lifters and run.

Right!?! Part of my frustration. I'm used to working on old diesels, And certified on Cummins epa 2010 and earlier. I'm proficient enough but this a new monster to me.

Might be in best interest to put in another motor or replace head.unfortunately ecm need everything working right.
Bender0013 answered 9 years ago
Head job should take about 4hrs or so depending on how bolts come out of exhaust. Motor replacement 8hrs or so.

Yep. Gonna start on the head in the morning. Thanks for the talk friend.
