Transmission removal questions

My son wants to buy a 1996 2 door Tahoe 4x4. Seller says engine and other components seem fine, but transmission is in "limp mode"(wont shift past 2nd gear). Truck has 170k miles on it. Assuming the engine and rest of truck are ok, what could be causing this problem, and if the tranny has to come out, what problems will we run into removing it? I am the DIY type, and have done engine, trans. work on several vehicles. If this trans. is anything like a late 80s-early 90s S-10, I want no part of it. If it is similar to the older 1500 series pickups, I would not be afraid to tackle it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

they are still no fun changing just like the old ones, without lifting the body to get to the top bell bolts.
you dont have to llift the body you just need about a 3 foot extension and a swivel socket... done it plenty of timess. its easy
No you dont have to lift the body but if you look it up it does tell you to do that. I tear cars and trucks apart for a living but ya you can get to them without lifting the body.
when i first read it it mentioned the s10 so i overlooked the fact that it was a full size tahoe, my bad, no body lift and you can actually get them from the top with a wrench also.
i have a 2000 tahoe...i cant get the top bolt...suggestions?
